If you want maps for your Garmin GPSr and don't want to use Topo GB then you could use the FREE ones from OpenStreetMap [http://www.openstreetmap.org/]. The map files offered here are compiled from the mapping data at OpenStreetMap. The license for the OSM map data is FREE, here is some data from the OpenStreetMap site: "OpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways." All of map files offered here are based on data from OpenStreetMap and are licensed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 2.0 license. If you use these files please make sure you attribute the OpenStreetMap community by including a link to www.openstreetmap.org [http://www.openstreetmap.org]. If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one. You can find out more about Creative Commons licenses here [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/]. Have more question about the maps and data? If you have any problems installing the map file or are unsure of how to do some of the steps then take a look at the FAQ here. I compile and use these maps on my Garmin Oregon 550, Etrex Vista Hcx and Etrex 30 and have the whole of the British Isles with contour data. The only downside it that they are a work in progress and missing some footpaths/bridleways but for most of the British Isles the road data is complete and many paths/tracks are included. If you like them then you can help by mapping where you travel and upload your track logs for use by the community to help improve the maps. CAVEAT: No mapping solution is perfect. Compatibility
Known Compatibility[**] (Please let me know if they work on other models) Contact details can be found here. If you click on the relevant hyperlink it will take you straight to the
section for the right mapsets. If you are new to this then you really need to
read the FAQ first.
[+] Only available with contours
for MapSource/BaseCamp/RoadTrip
[**] Most of the reports are from owners of the mentioned models who have downloaded & installed the mapsets themselves. [1] I have had a report that this works fine on a Nuvi
200 complete with voice guidance, so other listed Nuvi models may also
work. I have also supplied pre-loaded cards for some Nuvi models and they seem
to work fine. However, contour data might not show on all models.
[2] See point 5 in the FAQ for full details. [3] Only the Dakota 20 has a MicroSD slot, cards cannot be used on a Dakota 10 model. [4] I've had several satisfied users report that they work for them. [5] The OS 1:50K Look and Feel mapset does not route in the same way, and should not be used as a basic Sat-Nav system. Use my standard OSM Routable mapset for that.
Instructions
Please note: The newer Garmin Nuvi devices may use a directory called MAP
rather than GARMIN to store other maps in (such as the ones I offer here). They work fine on a Mac (BaseCamp/RoadTrip) and also in MapSource and BaseCamp on a PC (Windows). Latest Versions Full British Isles Mapsets
All of the mapsets with contours now use new 10m
contours that I compiled rather than the old Scottish Mountaineering Club
ones. The maps do not come in the traditional paper based scales of 1:50,000 or 1:25,000 as they are dynamic; the more you zoom in the more detail is shown (until it all appears). These maps also do not suffer from the jaggy display issues found with the official Garmin Discoverer maps when you zoom in. These will hopefully be updated weekly, each weekend: STANDARD MAPSETS (Using OSM/NASA data) If you are having any problems downloading the maps, please see
point 3a in the FAQ here

These can now be found on a separate page, here. I have tested these maps on a Garmin Oregon 550, Etrex 30 and Vista Hcx [the full British Isles versions with contour data] and also on a computer in MapSource/BaseCamp [PC only] for those versions designed for use with it to ensure that they load and render as expected. I do not test all the map data or functions as this is not possible in a reasonable time-frame.
